Get the look.
When decorating for children, it’s really important to choose a classic colour scheme and design that will grow as your little one does. Whilst they may be completely head over heels in love with Night Garden one day (and I know my daughter LOVED it!), these amazing little creatures of ours grow so fast that soon enough, Iggle Piggle will be Justin Bieber (and yes, I did have to Google him to check how to spell his name, but I’m sure I won’t need to in a few years!) and no amount of Tinkerbell pixie dust will turn them in to Peter Pan (mores the pity maybe!).
I was recently asked to attend a feedback group with Laura Ashley (a home ware brand I really like) on their children’s range. When looking though their new collection for Autumn, I was excited with the gorgeous colour tones they had chosen – classic but also unique, but had to admit to wishing that the actual design of their range was more subtle. Sorry LA! Whilst I would have opted for the colours in heartbeat for Griffin’s nursery, I was not at all sold on the designs which I felt would be very quickly grown out of necessitating a new décor well before the old one was ‘worn out’. And even me, who likes nothing more than picking out a new wallpaper and paints was put off by the idea and expense of having to redecorate a room every 1 or 2 years.
My advice is to choose carefully for the now and for the future. Plain walls are always a safe bet. Choose a classic colour like a cream or a cookie dough and then turn that room into a bedroom to love with gorgeous accessories and soft furnishings. If you do have a slightly older child, you can be a bit braver in your choices. We are in the process of doing Dalton’s room (who’s 5 going on 12!) and we have found the most amazing world map wallpaper which you can even personalise with your family’s special places such as where you live, where relatives live, holidays etc. It’s a bit of a splurge but I know he’ll love it for years to come and accompanied by one of these fab Globees will really give his bedroom a WOW! I have always believed that it’s better to choose carefully and pay for quality which will last for years than have to constantly be replacing things because they look out of date or tired after 6 months.
Whatever the age or gender, a well-made stylish noticeboard is a must for their all special bits and pieces, as is cushions – no room is complete without a cushion or two! Lots of personalised products made and chosen especially for them is the perfect way to make their room their own special place.
We’ve lots to choose from at D & T, so choose carefully and choose something that both they and you will love and enjoy for years to come.
